Will AI shoppers know you offer local pickup?

The AI answers with a short list of products and stores. And here's the part most merchants haven't thought about yet: it can only recommend what it understands. If your product pages and store info don't clearly say that you offer local pickup or same-day delivery, the AI has no way of telling shoppers that you do.
In a world of AI shoppers, "Available for pickup today" isn't a nice line in your checkout. It's a reason to be recommended at all.

Shoppers can now discover and buy from Shopify stores right inside AI chats.
AI shopping is no longer a side experiment
On March 24, 2026, Shopify switched on Agentic Storefronts, giving merchants access to ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app from the Shopify admin (Shopify). Products became discoverable in ChatGPT by default, with no extra apps or integrations needed.
Shoppers are already there. In Adobe's March 2026 survey of 5,000+ US consumers, 39% said they had used AI for online shopping, and 85% of them said it made the experience better (TechCrunch).
That doesn't mean shoppers trust everything AI does. They're far warier when a brand uses AI on them, as we covered in our look at the AI trust gap. But when they're the ones asking, they're listening to the answer.
And these shoppers are valuable. In July 2026, AI traffic to US retail sites was up 62% year over year, converted 60% better than non-AI traffic, and added items to cart at a 28% higher rate (Chain Store Age, Adobe data).
The catch: many stores aren't readable by AI yet. Adobe found that nearly 40% of homepage content on US retail sites isn't fully readable by shopping agents (Chain Store Age). If an agent can't read it, it can't recommend it.

AI shoppers are worth more, but most stores aren’t ready for them yet.
Why delivery and pickup info now shapes AI recommendations
An AI assistant doesn't just pick a product. It picks a store that can get that product to the shopper in the way they want. Shoppers ask questions like:
"Can I pick this up today?"
"Will it arrive before Saturday?"
"Is there free local delivery?"
The infrastructure is built for exactly this. The Universal Commerce Protocol, the open standard Shopify co-developed with Google for AI agents, has a fulfillment extension that covers shipping, pickup, local delivery and delivery windows (Shopify Engineering). In plain terms: agents are designed to read your fulfillment options and use them.
Shopify also built the free Shopify Knowledge Base app for this. When shoppers ask AI agents about your store policies, Shopify answers from your catalog and settings. The app lets you see those questions and add your own FAQs.

And pickup is exactly what shoppers want more of. 29% of US online buyers picked up an online order in store in May 2026, up from 22% in 2023. It's the only delivery method that has grown every single year (EMARKETER, Bizrate Insights).
Put those together: shoppers want pickup, agents are built to read it, and stores that state it clearly have a better shot at the recommendation.
How to make your delivery and pickup options AI-ready
You don't need a developer for most of this. Start here:
Check your AI channels. In your Shopify admin, open Agentic Storefronts to see which AI channels are active, whether product discovery is turned on, and which AI searches your products show up in.
Set up pickup and local delivery in your settings, not just in a banner. Agents read your store's settings and checkout options. A homepage banner saying "Collect in store!" is easy for an AI to miss.
Be specific in your shipping policy. "Fast delivery" tells an AI nothing. "Free local delivery within 5 miles, same day for orders before 2pm" gives it something to recommend.
Name your pickup locations properly. Use the real store name, full address and opening hours. That's what lets an agent answer "Where can I collect this near me?"
Open the Shopify Knowledge Base app. Check the FAQs Shopify generated about your shipping and pickup. Add your own for the questions shoppers actually ask: pickup times, how long orders are held, local delivery areas.
Keep it up to date. Holiday hours, cut-off dates and paused delivery zones all change in peak season. An agent that gives a shopper wrong info is worse than no answer at all.
Test it yourself. Ask ChatGPT or Gemini: "Where can I buy [your product] and pick it up today in [your city]?" See whether your store shows up and whether the details are right.

When AI can see your pickup option, more shoppers walk through your door.
Get it right before peak season
Black Friday and the holidays are when "Will it arrive in time?" becomes the question that decides the sale. Last-minute shoppers will ask an AI where they can get a gift today, and local pickup or same-day delivery is often the only answer that works.
The stores that win those moments won't be the ones with the loudest ads. They'll be the ones whose delivery and pickup options are clear enough for an AI to read and trust.
