Holiday shopping starts earlier every year: get your pickup and delivery ready now
Holiday shopping doesn't start on Black Friday anymore. Adobe expects record US online holiday spending this year, with shoppers starting earlier than ever, and forecast $9.9 billion in online spend during October's Prime Day event alone. The National Retail Federation expects November and December retail sales to grow 4.2%, to more than $1 trillion.

At the same time, the peak is getting tighter. Black Friday lands on November 27, and Cyber Monday falls in November this year, which squeezes online shopping into one long weekend.

For merchants who offer local pickup and delivery, that means two things: demand arrives sooner, and it piles up faster. The best time to set your rules is now, before the first rush order lands.

Why pickup and delivery feel the rush first

Shipping has a buffer: a warehouse, a carrier, a few days in transit. Local pickup and delivery don't. Every order lands on your own team, your own counter and your own van, often for the same day.

Local delivery has no buffer: every order lands on your own team.

That's exactly why shoppers love it in December. Last year, buy online, pick up in store peaked at 32–37% of orders on December 22 and 23, when shipping deadlines had already passed. Pickup is how you keep selling after the carriers stop promising Christmas delivery.

Behind every pickup counter in December, a team racing to get orders ready.

But without limits, that demand turns into a queue of customers waiting for orders that aren't packed, delivery slots your drivers can't cover, and pickup times on days your store is closed.

Five settings to check before the rush

  1. Order limits per time slot. Decide how many pickup and delivery orders your team can realistically handle i dper hour or per day, then cap each slot. When a slot fills, customers simply pick the next one, instead of you scrambling.

  2. Cutoff times. Give your team time to pick and pack. If you close at 6pm, a same-day pickup cutoff around midday is a safer bet in December than a few minutes before closing.

  3. Blackout dates. Block the days you won't fulfil: public holidays, stocktake days, the day after Christmas. Customers should never be able to choose a slot you can't honour.

  4. Last pickup and delivery dates. Pick your final day for pre-Christmas pickup and local delivery, then show it clearly on your site and in emails. It's one of your strongest late-season selling points.

  5. Staff permissions. If you fulfil local delivery through Shopify POS, check your staff roles now: fulfilling local delivery orders now needs the "Fulfill shipping, pickup, and delivery orders" permission. Better to find that out in October than on Black Friday.

Shoppers choose a pickup store, date and time slot right in the cart, so you only take orders your team can handle. See it in action on our Florist demo store.

Your holiday timeline

  • Now (late October): set your slot limits, cutoffs and blackout dates. Place a few test orders for pickup and delivery to check the whole flow, from checkout to the confirmation email.

  • Early November: brief your team on the pickup process and peak-day staffing. Add your pickup and delivery options to product pages and holiday emails, so shoppers know before they reach checkout.

  • Black Friday week: watch how fast slots fill and raise or lower limits based on what your team can actually handle. Avoid big setting changes on the busiest days.

  • December: announce your last delivery and pickup dates early and repeat them often. As shipping deadlines pass, push pickup as the way to still get gifts in time.

FAQ

When should I set up holiday pickup and delivery?

By late October. Shoppers start earlier every year, and you want time to test the full flow before Black Friday on November 27.

How many pickup orders should I allow per time slot?

Start with what your team can pack and hand over in that window on a normal busy day, then adjust after the first rush weekend. It's easier to raise a limit than to apologise for a queue.

What's the last day to offer pickup before Christmas?

Most stores can offer pickup until December 23 or 24, depending on opening hours. Pick your date, set it in your app, and announce it early.

Can customers choose a pickup or delivery date at checkout?

Yes. With Zapiet – Pickup + Delivery, customers pick a date and time slot at checkout, and you control which slots are available.
